My social action project, titled ‘Screen Smart, Thrive Smart”, was a fulfilling experience in my service-learning journey and I believe it has influenced the learners, teachers and myself within the educational environment. The "Screen Smart, Thrive Smart" initiative aimed to teach learners how to use their technological devices, like iPads and tablets, responsibly and effectively. This service-learning project raised awareness about both the benefits and disadvantages of technology use and how learners can be guided towards positive digital practices. This project was seen in its effectiveness through the active engagement from the Grade 7 learners when presenting the project through CANVA presentations, and informative discussions. This proved effectiveness as learners were able to relate to digital experiences that were discussed, thus developing their understanding of the importance of responsible and efficient online usage.

“Screen Smart, Thrive Smart” is an initiative that has had a profound impact on me personally as it has highlighted critical aspects of the world of technology that I would’ve loved to understand as a learner in Grade 7. It has taught me that we can make a difference in our learners’ technological lives and steer them towards a path that keeps them happy and healthy. I believe that I can use this social-action project in any school I go to and impart further knowledge to my future learners. This service-learning experience has become a mechanism towards my professional growth in which I developed skills that is valuable to the educational environment, such as engagement with my community further than just my learners, and the ability to create and build projects to empower schools and their learners.

The "Screen Smart, Thrive Smart" initiative has provided significant benefits to the Grade 7 learners of Trinity House Centurion as I have empowered learners to be aware of the decisions and actions they make on their digital platforms. Cyberbullying is a topic that is always addressed in which learners have believed it to be a cliched topic, however “Screen Smart, Thrive Smart” addressed cyberbullying in a manner that promotes social awareness and support within the online environment that engages learners in the topic allowing them to develop a deeper understanding of the impact cyberbullying has. Reflecting my social action project, “Screen Smart, Thrive Smart”, I can derive that the initiative was more than just an exercise to inform learners that technology has its advantages and disadvantages. It was a transformative experience that shaped my perspective on teaching and community engagement and provided learners with a heightened understanding of the digital world we live in which growth, learning and positive change rose.
